Control Your Stress Response

Dr. Derek Lawrence, ND ·

Fear, uncertainty and doubt can cause paralysis—metaphorically, hopefully not literally. When we face an uncertain future, it's easy to get caught up in every possible outcome instead of controlling what we can to change what does happen.

Learning to be present in the moment amid the chaos (and I promise, the chaos never stops; it just evolves) is an important tool now and moving forward.

Dr. Serena Goldstein, ND, wrote on this tool: “Mindfulness helps us discern what gives us a type of energy that brings a sense of fulfillment, outside of the situation itself, but perhaps adjusting our mindset if needed. Think of something you truly enjoy doing or someone who you truly enjoy being with—how can you live your life to emulate that fulfilling feeling?” (1)

This is a skill. Some people are naturally good at it, others less so, but practice makes permanent. Think of it as a muscle: the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.

For me, this is where meditation—specifically guided meditation—plays a big role. Apps remind me, motivate me and help me practice routinely. Many of my patients like Headspace, Insight Timer works well for most people, and Calm is another option. I'm personally drawn to Waking Up, developed by Sam Harris; intellectually and philosophically, it suits me.

In times of increased uncertainty, focus on what you can control:

  • Eat good food—not too much, and not too late in the day
  • Prioritize sleep; give yourself the opportunity for at least 7.5 hours
  • Get outside in the sun
  • Breathe
  • Make time to do something fun regularly
  • Wash your hands often
  • If you need help, ask

You aren't alone. Be kind to yourself. Working together, we can live with more ease and better health.

In health, Dr. Derek
