National Gluten Free Day

January 13th

It seems like every where you go there are increasingly more foods, menus, and even entire grocery aisles dedicated to the Gluten Free movement. Often times a gluten free lifestyle is preceded by formal autoimmune diagnosis’s, or allergen/intolerance testing. According to the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center: at least 3 million Americans are affected by Celiac Disease: an increasingly common autoimmune disease where an “individual’s immune system responds by attacking the small intestine and inhibiting the absorption of important nutrients into the body” after consuming gluten (a wheat protein). Today it is easier than ever to spread awareness and understanding for our gluten-avoiding friends. The following are 5 tidbits of information and ideas to add to your National Gluten Free Day celebration this January 13th:

  1. Education

In the early 2000’s, the Food Allergen Labeling And Consumer Protection Act was passed which made it easier for those with food allergies to identify them on the labels of their foods. This law provided the framework for gluten awareness in foods, and Gluten Free diets, products, and lifestyles on the rise. Check the link above to educate yourself on the Law, and what it means for those suffering with food allergens and intolerances.

  2. Celebrate Together
Just about any excuse to eat with friends is a good excuse, right? If you’re gluten-free invite your gluten-loving pals over and cook them your favorite GF meal. OR, if you’re the gluten eatr in your friendships, call up your fellow gluten-free friend and have them pick a restaurant as well as order for you, if you’re feeling adventurous.

  3. Recipes
Sure, avoiding a certain food or meal once or twice is (for the most part) fairly simple, but what if you were to require re-arranging your entire diet and lifestyle? Millions of Americans have to do this when they realize they must adopt a GF diet. Branch out, gain some new experience, and try some new Gluten-Free versions of your favorite recipes. You may be pleasantly surprised to find you don’t miss the Gluten (try Doc Derek’s Gluten Free Stuffing recipe).
